Mr. Serlen’s achievements across a wide spectrum of family law matters has made him well known and respected amongst lawyers and judges throughout New York State. He has over twenty (20) years of experience representing high net worth individuals in complex support and equitable distribution matters, and in handling all facets of complicated custody cases.
Mr. Serlen’s ability to favorably settle problematic cases has earned him a reputation for inventiveness, common sense, and ingenuity. Though he strives for a favorable resolution without resort to extensive litigation, Mr. Serlen also recognizes litigation can be a necessary component to achieving favorable results. He brings an aggressiveness and creativity to litigation which has helped the Firm achieve notable victories in extraordinarily complex financial cases and highly acrimonious custody cases, including seminal cases which the Firm successfully litigated both before trial and appellate courts throughout the State.
Mr. Serlen recognizes the power of the written word and takes great pride in his and the Firm’s reputation amongst colleagues and courts as expert draftsmen. His attention to detail, skillful preparation, and proficiency in writing has been integral to the Firm’s achievements and successes at the state, federal and appellate level in a wide array of matters, including victories before the New York State Court of Appeals. It is not uncommon for the Firm’s writing to be directly quoted and utilized in judicial opinions.
The expertise and accomplishments Mr. Serlen brings to the Firm extend well beyond family law. Mr. Serlen is equally sought after as counsel in complex commercial disputes, contractual disagreements, creditor-side bankruptcy matters, real estate disputes, and inter-company conflicts. Again, by swiftly analyzing the issues, recognizing, and weighing costs versus benefits in each unique dispute, Mr. Serlen is able to efficiently navigate through complicated and multi-layered issues and successfully provide counsel to a diverse group of clients. He regularly represents owners and developers of commercial and residential properties, professionals, closely held companies, and high-net-worth individuals and their business interests. When litigation is necessary or advantageous to his clients’ interests, Mr. Serlen is a steadfast advocate and tireless protector of his clients’ rights.
Mr. Serlen also is sought after for his decades of expertise in transactional and general corporate matters. Bringing a litigator’s eye to transactional and consulting work, Mr. Serlen offers a unique and comprehensive level of representation. His wide range of experience, knowledge and well-honed writing skills have helped guide and protect the Firm’s clients in a broad range of areas, including financing, shareholder/member and partnership issues, acquisition and sale of commercial and mixed-use buildings, new construction, internal governance, title issues, and commercial paper transactions.
After graduating from Lehigh University, Mr. Serlen attended the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. While in law school, Mr. Serlen completed training and was certified as a divorce mediator. He also clerked for the Honorable Phyllis Gangel Jacob, Justice of the Supreme Court, New York County where he assisted with drafting Court opinions.
