Judith Richman founded the Firm in 1985.
Throughout her career, Ms. Richman has specialized in representing high profile and high net worth clients, attorneys, professionals, business owners and corporations.
Ms. Richman has a well-deserved reputation in the legal community as one of the premier attorneys in the field of family law. She combines insight, creativity, compassion, tenacity, and skill. Highly accomplished and experienced in the full range of complex matrimonial matters, including litigating and negotiating complex equitable distribution and support issues, emotional and delicate custody matters, pre-nuptial agreements, and post-nuptial agreements, Ms. Richman is well-known as a strong and effective protector of her clients’ interests. It is this devotion and hyper-vigilance to her clients’ needs and priorities that has led Ms. Richman to be highly sought after as counsel in the most difficult and intense custody proceedings, as well as complex support and equitable distribution matters involving significant contested separate property claims, international assets held by various trusts and corporate entities, and highly sophisticated financial structures.
While Ms. Richman’s reputation for success in litigation is well-deserved, she is equally known for exercising calm, sound, and reasoned judgment in devising creative solutions to her clients’ problems. In fact, most of her cases are ultimately resolved favorably for her clients without resorting to extensive judicial involvement or litigation. Beyond this, Ms. Richman has successfully negotiated and drafted countless prenuptial and postnuptial agreements.
She has successfully tried numerous cases and has the distinction of being one of the few attorneys in the State of New York to have had her clients awarded 100% of the marital assets after trial. Ms. Richman successfully defended these verdicts through appellate courts to the Court of Appeals, New York State’s highest court.
In addition to her matrimonial work, Ms. Richman regularly represents and provides counsel to high worth individuals and corporate clients. Regularly called upon for her skill as a commercial and corporate litigator and negotiator, Ms. Richman has provided general counsel and litigation services around the country to distinguished professionals and leaders of varied industries, including CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, senior management of financial institutions, and large and small business owners.
Ms. Richman attended New York University and was admitted to the Bar in 1977 after clerking at the firms of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP and Martin Clearwater & Bell. She has the distinction of being the one of the last attorneys admitted to practice law in the State of New York under “Articles of Clerkship”. Beginning her practice in the field of commercial litigation, Ms. Richman thereafter was the head of the matrimonial department at Shaw, Goldman, LiCitra, Levine & Weinberg, before joining the predecessor firm to Sonnenfeld & Richman LLP in 1982.
